First duck egg from last batch

The “baby” ducks have officially grown up! We got our first egg! I believe its from one of the Rouens since it’s white…I’ve been assuming the Buff ducks will lay a tan-ish egg , similar to how the Blue Runners lay a blue tinted egg.

This egg is on the small side since they just started laying so it’s close in size to the medium chicken egg. It will still taste great!

Greens to lace…overnight

So much for my mustard greens! Overnight they were eaten to this. I suspect lubber grasshoppers as I squished several dozen a few days before finding this. Me 0 bugs 1. Need to bump up the plans for a screen house or covered rows it seems.

Yard damage…now what?

My neighbors have a gorgeous field for a yard. They spend all their free time keeping it trimmed and cleaned up. Very nice, relatively flat, solid green grass.

Well, they HAD a pretty yard. Seems a wild pig or several decided it looked good to them too! Within a week their front area was decimated. Within two weeks most of the property had clumps and holes galore. Not walkable, barely drivable with a tractor, and requiring a lot of work to fix. Plus…the damage expanded daily.

I found some damage on the back of my property near the creek too along with hoof impressions. Interestingly, there were less hoof marks than I expected. That and the piles of poop near my fence said wild hog for sure.

So now…I set up some game cameras on my side and one facing their yard to see if I could find the culprits…let’s see what happens!

This does not bode well….

I wish the website had said they had an issue with these before I ordered! Not cool Baker Creek….not cool…

Maybe I’ll have better luck than they did! Considering the last batch of artichokes I tried never even sprouted, I’m not looking forward to this experiment….

Sneaky door lock

If you’re scratching your head and wondering what this is….it’s me almost getting locked out! Apparently as the door opens and closes the lock sneaks out further and further and further. Nice try lock…I caught ya this time! Hopefully I catch it next time too :).

What does wild pig poop look like?

It looks like clumped together balls…at least when they decide to eat most of the oat seed you sowed as groundcover.

Hopefully the new section of fencing stops this issue!

Proof that turkeys are…dumb.

See the 50 inch cattle panel fence? Nice and short for anything with a set of wings? Well….

I was working outside and started hearing a bunch of animal fussing. My birds were putting up enough of a ruckus that I knew it was not an attempt to get an early dinner. I knew it wasn’t a hawk because they make a different noise for airborne “threats” including dragonflies. Looking around I see a wild turkey…running up and down the fence line! “Oh no” I thought. “It must have a hurt wing and can’t fly”. Logical thought right?

So I zoom in and snap a few pictures because its the first wild turkey in the yard. Then I start walking over from the back of the property while plotting ways to catch the poor turkey to get it to a rehab…because it surely is broken….

I get about 50 feet away when suddenly her brain turns on and the turkey backs up 10 feet…backs up another 10…then suddenly leaps up and opens 2 perfect wings and flies over the fence!

Yes…yes…the turkey was fine. Apparently 10 minutes of running up and down a fence line was enough to remember she can fly! Fun part? She had to have flown onto the property in the first place on that side or the dogs would’ve barked their heads off.

Picking house color paint fun…part 2 of the saga

(See part 1 here)

After finding out just how much the primer changed the paint color on what I thought I liked, the next trip to town I tried again.

This time I bought more primer and picked out 5 varied shades to try again. I also got a sample size of a dark brown to put in the first primer gallon…because I’m realizing I may not get the whole house painted befire rainy season so I’d rather have off white pat he’s on the house than pure white.

I came home and applied two coats of primer over 5 more sections of the house. At this rate by the time I pick a color the whole side might have 3 coats! I then painted each section with one if the sample colors….arranged darkest to lightest. Now this is what the side looks like:

Far right two are the original ones (same color with and without primer). I quickly discovered the tan one far left is a lot more yellow than the sample so that’s out. Next to that (going to the right) is a nice shade of…baby poop. I’ve seen that color under cages. That’s out! Middle one isn’t too bad but the paint was watery and did not cover well-it would need a redo sample. Then we have a “brown” that looks grey to me…and I kinda like it! After that is one called nut brown …even though I do like the color I think it will soak up too much heat in summer.

So now that I see how grey looks, I’m thinking of trying some lighter shades of grey samples. I also realized there’s enough wood texture even with 3 coats I may be able to do some dry brushing and get back some of the weathered look I like! To be continued….

If your cat’s eyes reflect different colors at the same time…..

Normally when I take a picture of my cat using the Flash both of his eyes reflect green, Which is common for cats. However the other night his one eye was bothering him and when I went to try to take a picture to show the vet it actually reflected red!

Is black-and-white cat by Susan L Marsh 2 different colored eyes

Now in my case I already knew there was an issue with the eye as this is a reoccurring condition for him. Earlier this is how he was holding the eye -notice that it is shut-

A trip to the vet and some eye stain later confirmed what I already suspected-he had abraded his eye and it was bothering him. I showed the vet the picture and he said the irritation has inflamed the blood vessels in the eye causing them to reflect red. So if you take a picture of your cat and the eyes are different colors, get it checked out in case it needs treatment!

This could have been messy….

Dr. Pepper soda frozen and bulging

Personally I drink my soda at room temperature so at least I know this was not my doing…..
